COLIN SCOBIE (violin) was born in Edinburgh in 1991 and began playing the violin at the age of eight, taking lessons with Barbara Donaldson (at Peebles High School) and Rosemary Ellison (at St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh). He was also taught by Fiona Winning and Catherine Marwood, before going on to the Royal College of Music in London, studying there with Dona Lee Croft and Lucy Russell. He is completing his studies at the Royal Welsh School of Music.
Colin's concerto debut was held in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall, where he played Bach's Brandenburg No.4 - recorded by Radio Scotland and since relayed many times. Other broadcasts include a Piazzola duet with trumpeter John Wallace, and he has given a number of solo recitals in London and southern England. Previous concerto performances have featured works by Bach, Telemann, Saint-Saens, and Dvořák, the most recent being a performance of the Dvořák violin concerto with the Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra. He was a participant in the 2011 “Ann and Peter Law OAE Experience for young players”, and before joining the FSQ had already been an active chamber musician on both violin and viola, as a member of the Vardanyan Quartet, and also collaborating with such eminent musicians as Marcia Crayford and Stephen Orton. He is also busy as an orchestral player: recent engagements have included performances with Florilegium, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Gabrieli Consort, Yorkshire Baroque Soloists, The King’s Consort, and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.
He has won prizes in the 6th International Telemann Competition, RCM Early Music Competition, and the Edinburgh Festival Competition. He was invited to join the Fitzwilliam String Quartet in March 2011, following the retirement of their second violinist of 37 years. He currently plays on a violin made by Roger Hansell.
